It was about 11 P.M., and Billy started to get his typical second wind.
Feeling more awake and motivated than the previous hours, he brewed a
fresh pot of coffee. He fixed himself a cup, adding his typical cream
and sugar.
He drank down several sips of coffee, wondering if who ever
just called, might call back. Maybe it was his mother or father in
Michigan.
Maybe someone died. While setting the cup of coffee down on a
handy end-table, the phone rang again. This time he was only a few feet
away from the telephone.
After the first ring, he picked up the receiver. "Hello!" he answered
calmly, but with great anticipation. Again, no one replied. However,
there was the same static he heard a few minutes earlier.
Billy shouted
out, "This call is being traced, my friend!" Billy just knew it was a
prank call. Usually this bluff would cause the other party to hang up,
and stop calling.
The idea was to teach the other person a lesson for
making prank calls and perhaps move on to an easier target. However,
this didn't seem to be working.
Even after bringing it up a notch, by
calmly instructing the other party to just stay on the line a few more
seconds, there seemed to be no response.
The static sound continued.
Billy hung up the phone after shouting, "You're a stupid son of a
bitch!"
After fixing himself another cup of coffee, Billy returned his attention
to the dresser, and journal. He picked up the journal and started
flipping through it, studying the pages inside.
He quickly read through
a page that referred to painful feelings, personal tragedy, and
unhappiness.
There were some references to marriage, broken promises,
feeling abandoned, and extreme loneliness. Billy thought it was
interesting. But who could it be?
He continued flipping through pages, trying to find reference to the
author. After reading a half a page about spiritual matters and some
politics, Billy started feeling bored.
Billy thought this was probably
just going to be something to weigh down the trash, making it an even
longer haul to the dumpster, come Wednesday. |
